“A Silent Voice 2”: Movie Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast, And More (2025)

“A Silent Voice” (Koe no Katachi) is a 2016 Japanese animated movie written and directed by Naoko Yamada, which was based on a story by Reiko Yoshida and featured character designs by Futoshi Nishiya. The movie is based on the same-titled manga which is written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. The movie had its premiere in Japan on September 17, 2016, and it had been released in various parts of the world between the period of February and June 2017.

Unfortunately, for the fans of this movie, we have sad news. It seems that the continuation of the story will not happen at all. But you never know, maybe the leaders of the film industry will be able to pleasantly surprise us this time.

In today’s article, we are going to inform you (actually, remind you) about the released movie “A Silent Voice”, the manga on which the whole story is based, and also what are the reasons why we should not expect a sequel to this teen psychological drama movie – “A Silent Voice 2“.

What is the plot of “A Silent Voice” movie?

As we mentioned before, “A Silent Voice” belongs to the genre of a teen psychological drama movie.

The movie follows the emotional, social, and spiritual attributes that emerge in an elementary school group of young people who have a hearing-impaired girl join them, especially as to how those attributes relate to the hearing-impaired girl. Teens respond to the new kid in different ways, some of which are negative and some of which are more neutral.

Shoya Ishida, a former delinquent, uses his friends to bully the deaf girl, Shoko Nishimiya. When Shoko finally transfers schools, all of Ishida’s friends and teachers blame him for bullying her into transferring. Despite the varying levels of responsibility that others have had in torturing her, he was made himself a victim.

This causes Ishida to be excluded by his peers into his senior year. As a result, he concludes that having friends is pointless. Due to his utter lack of long-term planning, Ishida has even tried to kill himself.

With redemption on the table, he realizes that he can learn sign language and unexpectedly makes contact with Shoko, who is deeply lonely because of her hearing disability and extreme shyness. In this phase, Shoko begins to contemplate suicide as a result of the difficult social and emotional situations she faces with.

The movie excellently and appropriately portrays different aspects of a teenage relationship, such as pride, rejection, betrayal, redemption, and genuine love.

Movie director Naoko Yamada did a great job of describing the interior worlds of the two main characters, Shoya Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya. Every particular detail, that seems to place a constant divide between Shoya and Shoko, was carefully worked out and shown as well, whether it’s referred to the visual or sound movie effects.

“A Silent Voice” – Manga vs. Movie

“A Silent Voice 2”: Movie Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast, And More (1)

At first, “A Silent Voice” was a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. This series began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in August 2013, originally published as a one-shot in the February 2011 issue of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. Manga ran its course until its conclusion on November 19, 2014.

The first seven volumes of Kodansha’s tankōbon edition of the manga were released in Japan. The manga was first released in digital form by Crunchyroll Manga and later printed in English in North America by Kodansha Comics USA. (Tankōbon – Japanese term for a book that is not part of a series or corpus, most often used in reference to independent volumes of a single manga series).

Within the first week of release, the firsttankōbon volume sold 31,714 copies, placing it at number 19 on the Oricon manga chart. In 2008, “A Silent Voice” received the award for “Best Rookie Manga” from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.

Until February’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine chose it, the vector of the content made it nearly impossible for the content to appear anywhere else, such as in a manga magazine. The serialization has been reviewed and supported by the Japanese Federation of the Deaf, as the subject matter deals with the lives of deaf people. It was nominated for the 8th Manga Grand Prize.

You don’t have to read the manga if you see the movie because of its excellent adaptation. While this is beneficial, we do still recommend it. There is an abundance of content provided with all of the side characters and a few arcs that the movie did not address.

In the manga, sidecharacters definitely get more time and attention.

An arc, which plays a large role in shaping the second half of the story, is cut from the manga. Many characters in the movieend up feeling out of place or useless.

You’ll also see some excellent paneling in the mangaseries that somehow didn’t get mentioned in the movie’s direction. There are alsoseveral fantastic sequences in the moviewhere the plot fails to deliver.

There is supposed to be a deeper relationship between Shoko and Ishida as the moviegoes on. Viewers get a better understanding of why this scene is considered to be one of the most symbolic in the show, thanks to this love story.

Finally, there are a lot of more things that were cut from the manga e.g. the movie that we saw didn’t have subtitles for what the sign language meant. However, the core ideas are there. Both are worth your time. So, read it and then watch it.

Will There be “A Silent Voice 2”? The Latest Updates on a Sequel

“A Silent Voice 2”: Movie Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast, And More (2)

There has been no word on whether a sequel will be made for the movie, which is based on a manga that lacks more content. This first movie has already devoured the manga’s story and plot points.

The one and only “A Silent Voice” movie concluded on a really nice note and there does not appear to be a follow-up to it. Unfortunately, Yoshitoki Ōima had created seven volumes of the original manga seriesand that’s it.Many elements have been transferred from the book to the movie, to make it. There is currently no source for the story to continue in a sequel.

In the movie, the story actually came to an end. When fans know this, they also want to see how their later years will turn out. They are eagerly awaiting news of whether Nishimiya and Shoya actually marry in the future. It only addresses their current situation; there is an infinite number of possibilities.

Manga is an excellent resource for people who want to read the story, but even if you’re interested in the story, we strongly encourage you to read the manga instead. These additional scenes were included in the manga, even though they couldn’t be incorporated into the movie because of time limitations.

Re-runs, DVD sales, and internet downloads contribute to the likelihood of a series or movie getting a sequel. They consider various factors, including the origin of the franchise, the level of popularity, and sales of the franchise.

It consists of two distinct storylines that are distinguished by their temporal relationship, and which have 62 chapters and seven volumes. Unfortunately, the movie takes up the story of the manga from start to finish. It finishes just like the manga.

The movie did well during its run in cinemas in Japan and worldwide, earning a nice amount of money. According to this, there can be no obstacles to making a sequel.

The series’ popularity affects whether or not the franchise gets a sequel. In the case of a movie, it is more important to be original.

On MyAnimeList the movie ranks on 12, with a popularity ranking of number 24, backed by 1,582,657 members. Because it’s so high on the list with so many other anime series, the movie is guaranteed to do well. It is proudly listed on the website with an 8.98 score.

On IMDb, A Silent voice has received 8.2/10 by 55,311users, and it hosts a Metacritic review of 78 out of 100.

Those are very good scores for creating a sequel, don’t you agree?

Because of this, the show’s popularity is not all that great, but it has lasted this long by making sure to get a favorable spot on both – MyAnimeList and IMDb list, as well. This is because the show’s popularity will not hinder the chances of the movie’s sequel.

In the end, we want to conclude that, whether we get a sequel to the movie or not, the prequel tugged at our heartstrings in both – sadness and joy. Watching the movie, we felt so happy because of all the mistakes we made in childhood, the redemption, and the difficulties that followed.

We would be happy for the sequel to come because we do not doubt that there are people who would know how to make a beautiful story, like the previous one, even if it had no basis in the book.
